Toda Hut !! India’s Vernacular Architecture

Toda people are Dravadian ethnic group who live in the Nilgiri Mountain ranges of Tamil Nadu, India. They are the main tribe that used to reside in the Western Ghats reign of India. Toda community is well known for its heritage, art and embroidery. Todas worship nature and have now built colonies of their own in some sacred areas of Tamil Nadu.

Their main occuation is farming and cattle husbandary. They have their own set of rituals that we find weird in today’s scenario. They believe that they’re the descendants of Pandavas, and thus, one woman gets married to all the male members of family, and they would all be her husbands.

Although, we had reached Ooty on 11th feb.2k18 and have been visiting all around the town, then on 14th feb. , me and my husband have decided to visit Toda’s sacred hut, that GPS shown us as Toda Temple. So we followed GPS and decided to go pedestrian.

That was the time, we had seen the real TamilNadu, that resides from big Bunglows to tiny slums, but one thing is must to mention is the Cleanliness and Hygiene ethics that people follow.

Passing through some marketing area, we reached Botanical Garden and then strictly followed GPS as it was pointing on the peak of that hill on which garden is located.

Botanical Garden Area, Ooty

Wandering through the garden area, we were getting closer to the Toda Mund/ Temple. After trekking for 1 km. we saw it. But the path was really tacky. There were bones of animals spreaded all over. There was a group of dogs that chased us, and this was the most funny part of our trek, as we were searching a place to save ourselves.

On our way back to the Garden and then The Tibetian Market, we have also captured some beautiful scenes that I wish to share here with you all.

It was a nice and pleasant walk in the Garden and also awesome trek to the Toda Mund or you can say Toda Hut or Toda Temple.

XOXO,
